Characteristics

Greetings my fellow readers!

Remember last week's readings? The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin and The Canterville Ghost, by Oscar Wilde.
1. Can you recognize any of the characteristics for a short story in "The Story of an Hour"? Please, do list them.
 2. Mention what characteristics of novels you noticed in the abstract of "The Canterville Ghost".
3. Share a bit of your opinion on both stories ;)

  1. Hello, Ms.Andrea. I liked reading the Canterville Ghost; it is an entertaining novel. In that conversation between little virginia and the Ghost, some details can be seen and described as the setting the characters, style, and also mentions how the relationship between USA and England could have been in those days.

I also enjoyed reading the story of an hour, though, it is a little sad; particularlly the end of the story. It tells all the feelings and grief that Mrs. Mallard went through in that last hour; and how she finds piece and calm in the midst of her grief.

    1. Thanks for your contribution, Nelson. I am glad you enjoyed the readings.
If you enjoyed The Canterville Ghost, I encourage you to read the whole novel. It is short, so it shouldn't be difficult to read, and it is really funny. ;)
I would like you to develop further into what characteristics of each literary form did you recognize in the stories: Why would you say one is a short story and the other is a novel?

  3. Hello MISS ANDREA the novel charm me read and simultaneously made me think and reflect while some are in a golden cradle others are in a manger, everyone solve their social problems and seek ways to survive each day, for one is more important money the position, for others it is more important family education, I liked the action that took virginia to help the fantasta, I showed a humble, kind, and generous heart and I believe that we should follow the example of virginia to help others today.

I like reading the story of an hour, but the end is sad because all her feelings emotions, felt at the last hour and as finds peace in the middle of something incredible pain, a very strong woman worth admiring, despite everything could overcome the pain no matter the circuntancias.

    1. The differences you noticed between the characters are very interesting. They are most definitely very different in many ways, even though they do have things in common. I am glad you have reflected on that. I do wish, however, you could explain why you would classify this reading as a novel.

I am sorry, but I couldn't understand what you were trying to say about The Story of an Hour. Please, also write a short explanationg of how it is a short story (the characteristics of a short story you were able to identify).

  4. Life is nothing but a mixture of paradoxes. Birth or death? Freedom or captivity? Fall or Spring? Friend or foe? Grief or glee? One can see all these contradictions in a three page short story by Kate Chopin.
The Story of an Hour made me realize that there is no absolute thing in this world. Not only we are the wanderers spread in the universe but also we are sure of nothing from within. Mrs. Mallard is just like all of us, not necessarily with the same story, but with some differences in details.
The story of an hour is the story of a lifetime. Along the story you do not get a chance to maintain a certain feeling.
It starts with breaking the death news to Mrs. Mallard and while you are trying to sympathize with Mrs. Mallard’s loss, the description of spring and a new life starts and change your whole world of grief. Thinking of the positive side of the story which is freedom, Mrs. Mallard feels that her soul is being haunted by pain. She mentions “Free! Body and soul free!” shows that she is just tired of her marriage and in desperate need of break.
Her marriage was neither blessing nor misery.
Another thing which got my attention was the female captivity by male. There is a chance that, Mrs. Mallard’s perplexity is because she has never been her real self and that is why she can not assert her feelings.
The male dominance on female is not a new concept and almost everyone knows about it. Women have always been considered the second class people in a society, even these days with lots of feminist theorist.
From the moment when they are born, it is the father who is the boss, and after marriage, the husband is the chief.

Women never have a chance to prove who they really are and what they want. When Chopin says “But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.” Although Mrs. Mallard does not detest her husband thoroughly, after his death, she feels that she is born again.

She has no one to boss her around and it is a time for her to belong to herself. Kate Chopin marvelously portrays the effect of social environment on the people’s ideology and views on life and feelings. that´s way I really ejoy it.

    1. Kleyri, this is plagiarism. I found this exact text in http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2267195.The_Story_of_an_Hour_and_Other_Stories
If I ask you to write about something, I want to know YOUR thoughts on it, not someone else's. You can always do research and read analysis, but never, I repeat NEVER plagiarize.

I will, however, give you the chance to do this homework again.

  5. I think both are narrative and short stories, The Story of an Hour is like a biography and is a non-fiction story, is a sad story and has multiple events. The Canterville Ghost is a short narrative story, is a fiction story it has few characters and is my favorite poor poor Ghost...

    1. Thank you for contributing Lissiem. They are both narratives, however, The Canterville Ghost is not a short-story. It is classified as a novel. What you read was just an abstract.
I am glad you enjoyed the reading :D

  6. I forgot that the story an hour is a short story and The Canterville Ghost; The structure of the book is like science fiction. The reason is because it goes about a ghost and ghosts do not exist. But it’s a funny book too, because the Ghost wants to scare the new people in the castle, but the people are scaring him.
I really enjoy the story because was funny and also the use of grammar is easy and there are not heavy words in it.

    1. Thank you for your input here. Science fiction is not related to the structure of the story, but to the content. I understand your confusion though. Science fiction is also different, because it uses scientific explanations even if it is for still unproved or inexistent things. This storify is closer to fantasy, and it is also a satire.
It is a valid attempt though.
